Much like bad weather swept through the northwest the previous evening, City overwhelmed the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This scoreline marked back-to-back WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the top team with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle league and European soccer with a small team has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had tried to rotate the squad with a a few changes. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

City, in contrast, have no such workload issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to build for Skinner and his squad from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from Manchester City whose dynamic forward line played with and pulled the visitors apart with a superb first half display that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Hemp was at the center of everything from the start, using the space left by Riviere down the visitors' right side. Her crosses were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had several forays forwards, their direct style giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, controlled the ball, probing their opponents and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a corner. A cross to the far post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's seventh header of the campaign.

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Ex- City player Jess Park came closest, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to record a one shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a delightful Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any side who ended above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after nine matches.
