Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
