Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
